I am not a typical Sonic fan. I was a SNES kid. I got a Dreamcast before a Mega Drive and the first Sonic game I actually owned was Sonic Adventure. But I have been with the franchise from the beginning, just not with the games. First and foremost I was a fan of the licensed comic.

Actually it was because Richard Burton (the editor at the time) had decided to use me as the main writer on the strip and he wanted me to come up with ideas of how I would like to approach the series. Having said that I should point out that the Freedom Figher idea was suggested to me and had come from Sega - so I kind of thought it would be a good idea not to reject it.

Brutus is one of the things about StC that I think hasn't held up well. He's awesome to look at but he's also kind of one-dimensional. His entire character is summed up by the famous figure he's named after. I also thought his whole existence was pretty contrived. It was uncharacteristically dumb for StC Robotnik, a dictator and a control-freak, to invest so much power in a character with intelligence and ambition matching his own and expect him to be satisfied with being his subordinate.

Thank you not just for the scans of some of the most iconic images for me (Sonic surrounded by SS's destruction, for one), but for also creating a commentary and a final parting paragraph that helped me truly identify how, and why, I feel about Sonic. Sat here next to bits of Sonic merch, it's good to remember why the blue hedgehog fills me with childish glee.
