To be fair to Spielberg, it's not hard to think that way when the American gaming market is filled mostly with vapid, shallow (but fun) games; shooters, Grand Theft Auto, Guitar Hero/Rock Band, etc. etc. etc. I'm pretty sure no movie director in Japan (where RPGs and other story-driven games are much more popular) would think the same.

That's a good point. Video games are extremely diverse but most of this diversity is invisible to the general public. In the West only a very narrow range of games - typically either the 'casual' products or the ones pretending (badly) to be films - get the lion's share of publicity and misrepresent the whole.
