I smell office politics.

What it sounds like is that somone wanted her gone, so fake whispers of theft, and someone else wanted her to stay, but couldn't swing it, so they made sure she's at least happy.

Yeah, but that may not have anything to do with it. It's hard to know what happened--Bob himself could've simply decided he didn't want to employ her anymore, for whatever reason, and handed down the edict.

Funny timing, though, on their part--because tomorrow is the day before Mother's Day, so a lot of folks traditionally come to Bob's for breakfast with their families, and there's already one cook down (vacation), and Cat was the fill-in. Gee, so meals tomorrow are going to TANK...

Like I said. Politics. Betcha either Sunday or Monday, Cat gets asked back. Betcha.

Kinda doubt that, actually, but it would be interesting.

yep, that smells like office politics alright.

At least the VP is on Cat's side. Maybe he'd be willing to write a written reference?

Might be a good idea to have a friend of yours (who's done hiring things before) pose as a potential employer and quiz the people who stated they would be references and see what they'd really say.

Couldn't they just roll the 401K monies over into an account YOU guys have control over, isntead of pulling it out and handing it to you???

"Da whole thing stinks like yestehday's diapahs..."

As far as I know, rolling it over into a controlled account may have been an option, or they may have a standard policy of withdrawing the funds. Keep in mind, too, all the nifty new physical therapy/arthritis support/neurological support/endocrinology support comes from Bob's insurance, which will all stop.

I'm probably scheduling an appointment with Dr. Loy to be seen initially for the few feet problems I have, and then saying goodbye to good health care. Gah.

It is never standard to cash out your 401K. You may be given a time limit in which to transfer it elsewhere but they don't cash it out as a matter of course. (I think they may have to give you a minimum of ninety days, but that could be Colorado law and not apply here. I can check if you care.) One reason this isn't standard is the hefty tax bite you're gonna feel next year for early withdrawal ( ... )

Well, the COBRA continuation doesn't thrill me, having read through the paperwork at other institutions. And the 401K thing, hey, sure, we could continue it--if we have that option--but I'm not sure we do, and I'm not sure we'd want to, anyway.

It's just frustrating. Going from 'have insurance, have retirement fund building, have job loyalty' to 'well, we can upgrade our computer and get some new clothes and then the panic will truly set in'. Gah.

Could be a simple of the "straits" being tweaked by the freak factor. You guys aren't "normal" (thus why we love you). Therefore the heavy handed "kindness" is to avoid a whole slew of potential lawsuits.

Yeah, but why freak out now? Why not freak out two years--and two Christmas parties, for that matter--ago? WTF?

Odd complaint from a new employee or customer?

Really doubtful. The complaints they've been getting of late--and they've been getting a TON--is that the chili no longer has spice in it, the filling vegetarian soups no longer have herbs. Because Bob "doesn't like spicy foods", apparently.

huh...sounds similar to what happened to me with my previous employer...with the firing me while offering me unemployment and references...although I had an attitude and was openly looking for other employment...

fucking, employers are stupid...Cappy and I were just talking about this the other night...they all somehow seem to be morons with no idea how to keep good employees happy and no concept of who they should try and hang on to...

I'm beginning to agree. It's like there's only one good thing to do, which is to invent work for yourself to gain those little shards of green paper, but that doesn't always work, either...

Speaking of work. I quit my job on Tuesday. Literally took of my apron, threw it down and said "Fine, fucking cook for yourself then!" The strange part is I'm now working three doubles in a row over our already busy weekend and today I get to cater a party for 130 people while still trying to cook for the regular crowd.

Yes, there is a bigger story here but I have to get to work.

It's nice to know you're in a town where you can cook anywhere, you don't have to settle for the lousy jobs.

It's a little less steady here, but it's pretty close to that.

I will look forward to hearing said story.

Well, you can read the earlier post, but basically it said, "Cat got fired today. WTF?"

Gets better--I'm about to explain how. :) Man, we need universe cuddles after this, damn it, this was a lot of intensity and stress I didn't need.
