You there! Stand by the mizzenmast! And you--up the rigging to the crows' nest, ye scabrous dog! And you three--draw your cutlass and defend against boarders! Arrr!

...What? It's Talk Like a Pirate Day. Come on, now.

Went to see Lord of War today. Really excellently done film, witty and smart and thought-provoking, that still managed to ( Read more... )

I like that geometric necklace. It looks like a less complicated version of one I made in 12th grade.

I've been wanting to see "Lord of War" too, not least because I like Nicholas Cage. Quite pleased by your mini-review of it, because it sounds like the kind of movie I absolutely love.

It was really hard to review the film and not give anything away. So much of that film relies on emotional impact, I think, regardless of which side of which equation you're on. Acting is top-notch, btw. And Jared Leto is scruffy and wounded and lickable, which always helps. :)

I like that necklace, too. But here's the thing--can you push a dog through one of the hoops in your necklace?

Didn't think so. :)

Going back to ugly greens teal_cuttlefish September 19 2005, 10:00:40 UTC
Remember our discussion about this year's green being an ugly acid green?

I bought a pack of colored washcloths. It had white, blue, brown...

and that awful acid green. Which Doug thinks is actually yellow. I want to know what vitamins he's been taking to make that look yellow...

On the other hand, the color is so ugly that I use it for a face cloth and can be sure no one else has used it for something I don't want to think about while washing my face. :P

I can help with a couple of the terms.... buttongirl September 19 2005, 18:16:22 UTC
but some I am just lost with!

Wenge is a type of wood that has become trendy for certain home furnishings- "The Wenge wood coffee table contracts boldly with the white rabbit fur carpet" (or whatever). It is a really dark brown wood.

Tropical Wool is a very light weight worsted (finely combed, well twisted (but not over twisted like crepe) fibers) wool fabric. It is commonly used in light wieght summer suits, suitable for wear in hot countries (Think Egypt and India- places the "Emm-pie-ah" had outposts and men would not be seen without thier suits).

Petti-skirt and Fanny still ellude me.... Good luck! And thanks again for your great fashion commentaries, I really enjoy them!

So, again, "wenge"=dark brown=why not just say dark brown???

Gah. Though I understand tropical wool now--not from tropical sheep, just wool woven light enough for hot weather.

I'm going to hazard a guess that "petti-skirt"--from lookin' at it--is a skirt cut and gathered to the traditional lines of a petticoat...but even that's iffy, because if so, that would be the world's smallest petticoat, yo.

And Fanny blouse...I can only think it's some connection to the style of blouse, but I don't know if it relates to doll clothing (like babydoll tunic/dress fashion, say, or at one point there was a crisp schoolteacherly doll, can't remember the name, that people wore full-size fashions imitating) or some old star (in the twenties and thirties, stars got styles of clothing named after them) that I don't now recall. Confusing.

Have you seen "Pirates of The Spanish Main"?

It's a card game. I picked up a couple when I went to get Serenity #3 from Merlyns. Cutest Idea Ever. It's a card game, right, so it has all the addicto-juice of games like magic... But from these cards, you punch out little pirate ships and put them together, then explore for booty on the high-seas (My coffee table).

Yes yes yes. We want more. We don't have enough for a full game yet, but the Silverback (English) and the Corazon del Mar (Spanish) ships are fully assembled and "sailing" under my monitor. :)
