One of the stories I've always loved from may parents was a time they were traveling by train in Europe, and they got into a conversation with the couple sitting next to them from Germany... my parents didn't speak German, the other couple didn't speak English (this was 50 years ago), but my parents spoke Spanish, and the other couple spoke Portuguese, and it was enough that they could get by and enjoy talking to each other. Your story reminds me very much of that. :) Yay for speaking with strangers in your own language!
