First day as a graduate student...

And I must say, it went very well :)

I only had two classes today (one of which was a lab), but of course have to spend the evening in the library, where I'm anticipating spending many a night.

Both of my professors appears to be interesting, animated (one perhaps a little too animated, might be time for decaf...) people, and even though I'm ( Read more... )

W00t, I am glad that things are looking good. Even if this whole "experimental" science thing is slightly foreign to me. It is always nice to find that a class is more fun than you'd feared; that happened to me a few times with course requirements in undergrad.

I'm also suddenly reminded of a really horrible video from high school Biology, where an imitation Darth Vader voice explained the Dark Side... of Photosynthesis! ...yes, I remember things like that.

*giggle* I have no problem imagining some goofy biologist/botanist making a video like that. Oh, the science movies I've seen... and at college level no less!

I also can't imagine anything but experimental science (which, you realize, was around a lot longer than your precious computers ;) ), especially science that involves field work. I guess I just like playing with stuff and getting dirty :)

Yay to field work. I also like science museums where you can actually touch things and do stuff.

One of the most memorable videos I saw in high school biology was about parasites (tapeworms, flatworms, ringworms, etc.) It so grossed me out that it turned me off of red meat for a long time! I didn't care how well it was cooked. It could still have PARASITES in it! Scarred me for life that video did. I'm much better now though. *<\:o)

Omigod, you don't even want to know the horrors I've seen in some of my labs *gag* One thing I have never been able to stomach is parasitology, and I've never considered myself to be one of those silly, girlie types who squeals at the site of blood, or getting dirty, etc. One time, in my mammalogy class, we had a real "treat". A local trapper brought in what was leftover, a bunch of carcasses (I think raccoons) which the school put in the freezer. They had to be thawed out for our lab so it was rather nasty. And the parasitology professor who was helping us out for this particular lab was so excited about it too :P Especially when she found a big fluke or roundworm. Ugh. I had to skip out early, I couldn't take it.

Awesome, hon! I'm glad you enjoyed your first grad classes :) I remember being bored stiff in mine...

Reading this: "My master's project..." I realised just how hugely happy i am for you! You made it this far, and show no signs of stopping. I'm certain you'll ace grad school the way you did your undergrad :) *HUG*

I'm glad your first day was a good one! I was thinking about you a lot today and sending you good energy.

Your project sounds like an interesting one. It's also good that a preliminary outline of your thesis is forming in your head.

Here's to the beginning of a new chapter!
