I think part of it is that, unlike most of the characters that are going to be in The Avengers, the two of them have actually met in canon. (When they're talking over the radio in Thor, but there are some scenes where they interact in the "Fury's Big Week" Avengers prelude comic that's set during the events of Thor.)

Also? There's an absolutely adorable scene with Clint and Coulson, which I expect definitely helped make the pairing a little more popular.

Like when that clip of Coulson calling Natasha started going around last week - all I could see on tumblr were people going 'omg Coulson is so wooooorried, oh poor woobie', and I guess they must have seen a different clip, because all I could see was Natasha being the bamfiest bamf ever in a way that made me all tingly. SIGH.
