What is the intended age for your illustrated myth? The stories of Atalanta, Arachne, and Penthesilea come to mind (all Greco-Roman), but if you're doing something for young girls, a good retelling of Briar Rose (European, it's the basis for Sleeping Beauty) would be pretty sweet, too.

Are you looking exclusively at mythology, tho? The story of the Trung Sisters would be a good one to look at, as well.

Myth or folk tale that isn't heavily copyrighted basically. I'm not really looking for something FOR young girls, but with some pretty strong female characterization, and even preferably female lead/hero because that's more my style than when the ladies are just sort of rescued maidens or side-characters. I know there are plenty of good strong female stories out there, just trying to not read through all compendiums trying to remind myself of them.

I also kind of want to veer away from 'lesson' stories where the character is punished for being proud or whatnot, and do something more triumphant or happy ending-ish.

Yeah... "female" and "happy ending" is just hard to find in mythology. I still reiterate looking into Amazons, Atalanta's earlier exploits, also Brynhildr, maybe some of Athena's war stories... but the humans all die eventually... not that happy, really. OOH! Iphis and Ianthe would be another good one! Especially if you're feeling sappy. There's alot of doe-eyes and longing sighs in that one, plus a happy ending.

Also, with your style, I'd suggest looking into Native American, Mexican, and/or Central/South American myths and legends... stuff I know nothing about, unfortunately.
