I'm actually surprised the people offering opinions in the article didn't pick on smokers. I mean, there are all *kinds* of reasons people get fat. Talk about a slippery slope! Is it less bad to support a person who *used* to be athletic, but suffered an injury, and is UNABLE to be more active? But no one accidentally smokes. It may be a hard addiction to break, but people still choose to smoke.
And I think you make a valid point about whether or not we support things we agree with in public works. I've had to endure many disagreeable things on the bus. There's a guy who likes wearing anti atheist shirts, and Christ fish eating Darwin fish. Oh well. I still need a bus to ride.
If one doesn't have a well and a septic tank, one might also wish to stop using the city's water and sewage utilities, what with the socialism involved there. Similarly with the taxpayer-subsidized high-voltage transport lines that get electricity from the places it is generated to one's local substation (you didn't think the deregulated energy companies paid for those did you? Heavens forfend!) and thence to one's home.
Good luck subsistence farming, jerks. It's a hard life, but I hear spiritually very satisfying. Adversity's good for you, right?
And as always what they are actually getting at is that they do not want their taxes to benefit black people. Or Mexicans. (All undocumented immigrants are Mexicans, even the majority who are Irish.) The America they want back is the America where everything is very solidly unfair in their favor. It's less so now than it was before and there's a highly visible symbol of that change and they have completely flipped their shit because of it.
