So, last week I got the news that my grandfather, at 89 years old, had a stroke. He was quite active until a few years ago - just had some vision problems and various surmountable old-people problems. But he's been going downhill, and the stroke was probably overdue. He's physically ok (except for remaining arterial blockage), but now thinks it's

Sorry to read the news. Strokes run in my dad's family; they can be really jarring for everyone since it's not just physical - but memory, emotional swings, all sorts of stuff in the brain get altered and the person you knew can suddenly be very different. On the good side, sometimes strokes seem a lot worse at first, but recovery can be rapid. Here's good vibes for your grandfather.

Don't have much experience with them, except that my mom has had a few small ones (and on the plus side stopped smoking). I got to talk to him on the phone which made it all seem better, even though he wasn't entirely "there".

If there's a fortunate side to the personality change, it seems to have brought out a very cooperative, sweet, gentle side of him (it was always there, but behind the hard-nosed farmer)
