New  to Livejournal. After BASCon it seemed to me I had no choice but to join up and learn how to navigate LJ. Sigh. So, pointers will be treated like gold. I barely know what tags are, etc, so you see where I am starting from. Be gentle.

Welcome to LJ! The LiveJournal FAQ in the Help & Support section will give you lots of help - it's pretty much how I taught myself to use LJ.

You not only need to learn what tags are but LJ cuts also. Groups will not let you post without them.
