HERITAGE TOMATOES!!! I hope yours do better than mine did. Last year I had some, and every one that touched dirt . . . rotted. This year I tried only grape and pear tomatoes; they were all up in those tomato-plant-holder-uppers, and almost every damned tomato's skin cracked.
Yeah, tomatoes can be finicky critters. I've had some good years -- never *spectacular*, mind you; I've still never had 'too many' tomatoes -- and some total disasters. One year I went completely nuts and grew 21 different varieties, just to see which ones worked best. I still grow a few of those varieties.
The small-fruited tomatoes are usually not too problematic. The cracking sounds like there might have been a rain/watering issue. Once they start to ripen, if you get a big rainstorm that can crack their skins. (SO many things can go wrong with the blasted things.) Still, nothing tastes like a fresh tomato off the vine. *happy sigh*
That actually sounds incredibly intense....and kinda scary. =( I only ever successfully grew a chia pet. I was maybe 8. And then, when my friend moved to alaska she asked me to watch her houseplants. They were doing fine until about a week before she decided to move back. Then they died. Just Poof! and they were dead. It was probably to protest leaving my house, one can only assume with plants though.
