I actually don't really have a thing to say about No Man's Land that other people haven't said better, but I also watched Allies for the first time on Saturday

I absolutely see Rodney this way, which is one reason I'm sometimes bemused by fans who are very harsh and condemning of Rodney's behavior, and often aggravated by how contemptuous and dismissive his coworkers are of him on the show. I mean, can't they *see* how desperately needy he is? I wonder if this is something he works on in his sessions with Heightmeyer.

To be fair, if you don't see Rodney as kindly as most of us in fandom do, his behavior probably does look like simple arrogance most of the time. And even knowing that someone's annoying behavior is really just a cry for attention doesn't always make it easier to live with -- I certainly wouldn't want to work for or with Rodney, so I can kind of understand the other people on the show, too.
But the part of me that doesn't have to live with him every day still wishes they'd get their heads out o their ass and start giving him a little more of the attention he obviously needs.
In my experience people have the hardest time with behaviors in others that remind them of things they dislike in themselves--I know that's true for me. I actually don't have that hard a time dealing with people like Rodney (I have worked with a few), and I think it's because my own insecurities and neuroses manifest in a very different way. And there I go again, getting WAY to psychoanalytical about a fictional character. :)
I think it's really generous of you to offer your plots up to all takers--I agree that two different writers are bound to have very different takes on the same idea. And I'd love to read more about this idea!
I see it exactly the same way. I've thought a zillion times how dangerous it was, because he could see right through undeserved praise, but genuine appreciation would OWN him, in no time flat.
Mm, I'm not sure about that -- he didn't exactly seem to consider the Wraith scientist in Allies a peer, he was way too condescending to him, but he still obviously loved the praise.
But I agree that it would mean more to him from smeone he respects. Unfortunately, the people closest to him are also the ones least likely to give him the approval he needs...
(trying to skip the spoiler because I still haven't watched the ep, shame on me)
Oooh, I love the poor misunderstood Rodney. I don't see him as arrogant at all - I have always maintained that it's a front. The "I hurt you before you can hurt me" defense.
So, yeah, totally with you on that one.
sadly, this is the point where I run out of plot.
*lol*
That's how I feel all the time. :) I can't write worth a damn. :)
In my case, I could make up some kind of plot pretty easily, because plot is totally formulaic -- you have your main theme, and then you need to have some kind of conflict that highlights that, and a resolution for the conflict that's somehow connected to the main theme... that's the part I could do in my sleep.
The hard part is finding a plot that actually pushes my buttons the right way and excites me enough that I want to write it. I've discarded countless fic ideas because to get to the scenes that I want to write, I'd need too many scenes that simply don't inspire me.

Needless to say, I love that, even if it's connected to some ribbing. :)
