I'm scared :(

Got some lovely news from my ophthalmologist today. Apparently I have a progressive eye disease called Keratoconus in both my eyes. It means the cornea, the transparent protective layer on top of the eye, will gradually deform more and more and cause increasingly bad distortion of vision. Apparently it can be stopped, more or less, with a semi- ( Read more... )

keratoconus, my luck, my life

*HUGS* That sucks.

Man, the wikipedia article is extensive. I think the treatment sounds promising, too. As I understand it, the cross-linking will completely stop deterioration.

The fact that your insurance won't pay is horrible. But, really, it's been this way for quite a while, the worst with dentists. Our health system needs big changes.

*MORE HUGS*

I'm going to apply to my insurance for an exception, but apparently the chances aren't great. :/

Ugh, IDK. I mean, I know there's a problem with dental procedures not getting covered, but at least there they can always hide behind "it's not actually medically necessary!" Like, they'll usually pay for something, just not the most aesthetically pleasing/most high-quality option. But with something like this - I mean, I could literally lose the ability to do important parts of my job if this gets any worse.

I thought of you this morning at the obgyn where i had to pay for a fucking sonogram. Not included in the cancer screening anymore. wtf. The worst thing is remembering how good it used to be and seeing everything stripped away over the years. The 'positive' side is that the intestinal cancer screenings and mammograms are moved further back the older I get. I'm guessing by the time I'm 50, they'll be moved to 60. *g*

That sounds awful, and eye trouble are the scariest. *hugs* The insurance needs a kick in the arse, it sounds like, big boo to them.

Fuck - that sounds extremely scary, yes. And I'm also shocked that you'll have to pay for the necessary measures yourself! WTF, you really do not expect that in Germany. I guess it's because the procedures haven't yet been officially put on some list of insurance-covered measures...? Suckage...

Fortunately it does sound like the treatment can stop your vision from worsening entirely. And hopefully the second opinion tomorrow can give you some additional tips and options... it may indeed not be as bad as all that.

Yeah, they're apparently applying for insurance coverage for the procedure right now, but it's new and experimental, and it's a long process to get approval. I'll justbe glad if it works at this point.
