My dad forwarded me an e-mail saying Bill Cosby should be our first black president -- not Obama. The entire message was supposedly written by Cosby, saying how black people should blame themselves for their status, not white people. And the last sentence said, "It's not about color... Unfortunately, the 'essay' is put together from remarks Cosby made at an NAACP event in 2004. I checked it on Snopes.

But citing that speech as evidence for why Obama shouldn't be president is just racist.

Especially given that Obama IS a black man who worked hard and manages to operate well in a white political world.

I was remarking on this the other day actually- how Obama gets fucked both ways. To some ignorant people, the fact that he's not shuffling and grinning appropriately means he's "not black enough." To other ignorant people, he's entirely TOO black. Fuck 'em all.

Seriously?? And here I was about to say that that doesn't sound like something he would say. Bleh. So much of it doesn't even make sense or sounds plain stupid and ignorant.

I also feel your pain on the family spam thing. My uncles and aunts are all conservative, and they shop all their racist, homophobic, fundamentalist bullshit around to everyone in my family. It's maddening.

I was thinking "Yes, this is something Cosby would say... but WHAT??!!" then I saw the comment about Snopes and understood why it looks weird... But I don't understand how this is Anti-Obama... it sounds like a way to incite change to me... *confused*

I'm pretty sure there are members of every race that are exactly like those targeted in the e-mail.
