Even with the light blocked, Caroline still felt as if it was melting her skin. Her head hung forward as she focused on anything but the pain encasing her body.
"You should know, last night when I put you in here, I sat in that doorway and cried." She could hear her father talking but failed to have the energy yet to look at him.
"Dad, I'm fine like this. You have to believe me," she complained, finally lifting her eyes to meet his. "I don't need to be fixed. I...can't be fixed." She winced, knowing this was not what he wanted to hear and honestly, Caroline didn't want to be burnt again.

She needed healing, but he could smell the vervain with every breath he took and he brought his wrist up to her lips. "Drink."

"I'm so sorry," Caroline whispered before pulling his warm wrist against her lips, her teeth breaking the skin and allowing her a quick drink of fresh blood. Her father was going to be so disappointed in her.

"Okay," she nodded, her arms reaching around his neck to hug him, knowing he wasn't about to let her walk out of there. Burying her face against his shoulder meant she wouldn't have to see her father's face as they left, either.
