I received the best marks of my university career for a course I could not attend. Read everything, had a friend take notes, really thought about the essays ... it all went well until I had to ask the professor whose class it was to supervise something the next year. 'Ah, Ms Brammers,' he said. 'I recall your excellent paper. Funnily, you don't look at all familiar.'

'Changed my hair,' I blurted. 'Gained weight. Sex change ...'
