Key's Angel Beats Anime Announced

The July issue of Dengeki G's Magazine has finally revealed what Key's new Angel Beats project will actually be. It turns out that Angel Beats wont be a game at all, but rather an anime series. Key is no stranger to having their works becoming anime series, but usually they have to make the games first before they get adapted into anime. This time however it looks like they're skipping the middle step altogether. & here we thought Little Busters would be the next Key series to get an anime.

Fans of past Key anime adaptations might be disappointed to find out that that Kyoto Animation probably wont be involved in this project, unlike in the past where they took care of the adaptations for Air, Kanon, & Clannad. Aniplex (FullMetal Alchemist, Gurren Lagann) is signed on to produce the series this time around. & while it's not impossible that they'll hire KyoAni to animate the series, it's also not very likely to happen. Maybe they'll be too busy tackling Little Busters?

This may be a Key story, but Angel Beats already looks to have more comedy rather than melodrama. It's already been mentioned how Yurippe, the girl seen in the early promotional art, looks very much like Haruhi Suzumiya. Now Dengeki G's reports that she's actually in charge of a group called the SSS Group. Plus there's no need to worry about your sad moe girls dying tragic deaths here, because all the characters are dead from the start! The story seems to take place in the afterlife, with these angel-like characters being involved in some sort of battle. Sounds a little cliched, but maybe that's part of the parody approach this series seems to be taking.
