Toon Disney/Jetix to Become Disney XD

Aug 09, 2008 22:55

Starting in February 2009, the Toon Disney channel will be going through a reconstruction & rebranding to become Disney XD. The change is being made to try to attract tween boys with action series, & also because of increasing the amount of live-action shows, which contradicts the Toon part of the channel's name (Power Rangers has been a big headliner for the channel for awhile now). Disney has also been using the XD name for the video streaming section of its website for quite sometime now, so the name isn't actually new.

So basically they're turning the whole channel into Jetix-like programming, but instead of just changing the whole channel's name to that (something I always thought would happen, actually). The news is a bit ambiguous on if just the Toon Disney portion will be changed & Jetix will still remain, or if the whole thing will now be known as Disney XD 24/7. But I'm pretty sure it's stating the latter.

One more interesting note is that among the new shows being added is RoboDZ (trailer above), a new CGI anime that'll be airing in Japan soon. It's actually one of the three new anime series being made for Japan by Disney itself. The others are "Stitch!" (an anime spin-off of the Lilo & Stitch movie) & "Fireball." No word on those two coming over to America yet, though.
