Slam Dunk Replaces Hikaru no Go

After running in the magazine for over 4 years, Hikaru no Go will be leaving the pages of the American version of Shonen Jump. The April issue, which goes on sale this week, will be the last issue to feature the manga. Starting in the May issue, it will be replaced by the classic Takehiko Inoue basketball manga, Slam Dunk.

The timing of this probably has to do with the fact that the Hikaru no Go anime on Toonami Jetstream has caught up to where the story is in the English manga, & Shonen Jump would rather feature stories their readers haven't already seen to keep them more interested. But that's just my theory on it. The American Go Association broke the story about the change-up, reporting the following on the matter:

Viz Media has announced the current issue of Shonen Jump will be the last appearance of Hikaru no Go. With a circulation of close to two million children and adults, the strip has helped youth go clubs flourish across the nation. "In a magazine jammed with fist-fueled fighting manga, Hikaru no Go has quietly carved out a place in readers' hearts," the editors at Shonen Jump state in a farewell message to the series. Nonetheless, the strip is being replaced by Slam Dunk, a manga about basket ball.
