ADV announced so many new licenses in the past 2 weeks that some wondered if they had anything left to announce for Anime Expo. but sure enough they did, as they announced the current Gainax hit "Tengen Toppa Gurran Lagann," the video game turned anime "Devil May Cry," & "Kyoshiro and the Eternal Sky (Kyoshiro to Towa no Sora)." Gurren-Lagann is a surprise only because it's still in the early episodes of airing in Japan. Aside from that, the show has become such a hit that fans knew it was only a matter of time. It's become popular even despite the controversy the series received in the first few weeks after one episode was poorly animated & fans complained like crazy online. Some of the Gainax big-wigs responded back & essentially criticized anime fans, resulting in some eventually firing & staff replacements. But the show has only gotten better since.
In episode 6 many other Gainax girls made brief guests appearances in bunny-girl outfits, such as Asuka & Rei (Evangelion), Mahoro (Mahoromatic), & Nono & Lark (Gunbuster 2). It turned out that the producers originally intended the episode to be a fan-servicey hot springs episode with the Gainax girls being guest babes in various states of undress. But because of the early airing of the show on Japanese TV, they had to scale it back. They hope to remake the episode for the DVD release to be done the way they want it, so hopefully they'll come through with their word so American fans can see it too.
ADV concluded with saying that more big announcements will be coming at Otakon. Likely possibilities include Lucky Star & Kanon. When specifically asked about the possibility of Kanon, co-founder
Matt Greenfield responded by saying to keep an eye out for future con announcements (a really big hint). It also depends on how well Kanon's sister series Air (currently airing on NebsTV) sells. Greenfield even mentioned that the Kanon girls guest appearance in
episode 2 of Air were carefully cast in case they pick up the series.
