Nymphet Manga Canceled

May 30, 2007 21:10

Seven Seas Entertainment announced that they have canceled their American release of the loli fan-service manga "Kodomo no Jikan," called "Nymphet" for the English version. The announcement came mere hours after Seven Seas said they were putting the title on hold despite its initial publication date of May 29.

The title was facing a lot of scrutiny online recently (mainly from Anime News Network) because of the content of the manga, which many thought was unsuitable for an American release. The story basically consists of an 8-year-old third grader making sexual advances on her 23-year-old teacher. & while the teacher never acts on her advances & no actual nudity or sexual situations are ever shown, the manga is full of panty-shots & other fan-service elements that many felt was used on too young of a character. The main argument of those against the manga was even though the teacher never took advantage of her opportunities, it's still catered to those who like really young lolicon and therefor wrong. One image from the first volume that has been making the rounds online recently is of the girl holding up an art project to her teacher that reads "I want you to ejaculate inside me."

Because of the backlash, Seven Seas announced on the day the first volume was supposed to be released in the US that they were putting the title on hold to look into the matter more & see if it really would work for an American audience. Just hours later, all traces of the manga was removed from their website, & they made the new announcement that the title would be canceled. Company president Jason DeAngelis stated that "it's not appropriate for Seven Seas to publish Nymphet." While at one angle this looks like a cowardly decision on the part of Seven Seas, another angle is they took the high road in that they would rather not release the title then edit it down. The company has expressed before they only believe in uncut manga.

An anime adaptation of "Kodomo no Jikan" is scheduled to begin airing this July in Japan, but after this fiasco it's a good bet that the anime wont be finding its way across the Ocean either.
