Japan on the ASOS Brigade
It turns out that the Japanese Haruhi fans are keeping an eye on the American version as well. One fansite is blogging all the occurrences going on at the ASOS Brigade website since it first launched. More recently the blogger has written about his take on the American voices of the series that can be seen in the first episode of AnimeTV. Luckily for all you English speakers out there, Kyon himself has translated what the blogger thinks about the dub:
Haruhi:
The nature of the voice is a bit different; however there is still the feeling of Haruhi. The original Haruhi speaks very energetically, so I predict there shall be no incompatibility in the English dub, and I assume it will be fine as far as she goes.
Kyon:
Even with the difference in language, Kyon's voice should do well in English, and English voice actor seems experienced, so I have no fear in terms of acting. I cannot believe he is the same person who played Alucard.
Yuki Nagato:
The data sample was small, so the best evaluation I can make is that she sounded consistent. Any further evaluation is impossible.
Mikuru:
Honestly, I would like to thank her for a good job. I think it is hard to reproduce a MOE voice in English, particularly since Yuko Goto is very good at it. I would like to praise her performance in matching Asahina's voice.
Koizumi:
I felt Koizumi's English voice to be the most incompatible with Koizumi's Japanese voice. However, I am not feeling bad about the acting nor do I think I cannot get used to it, so my evaluation may change as time goes on depending upon future efforts.
Shamisen:
I have never imagined that I could hear Shamisen's voice here. Compared to the English voice, Kenichi Ogata's voice is more moderate, warm and tender, but this might be the difference between how cats are seen in Japan versus the US. Furthermore, Japanese cats have kotatsu, and American cats do not.
Obviously based upon this small amount of information I cannot evaluate against the ADR. Even in the case of the voices that I didn't agree with, I can see good acting. In many cases I feel that the differences are acceptable.
So all I can say is I have more hope than worry for the English dub, and I assume the English cast will do a pretty good job. Since US fans are looking forward to the dub, I hope the dub will be made to meet such expectations.
