not necessarily. The manga never established itself as needing romance elements to begin with. Not only that, but the whole "Christmas cake" prospect of Japanese marriage has died down quite a bit over the years (from what I've seen, it's not that uncommon for Japanese women, both real and fictional, to hold off courting until their 30s or even 40s). It would make sense, considering Japan has the longest life expectancy in the world (can't say the same about female fertility, but then again, several married couples aren't having kids anyway, which is one of the reasons the birthrate is so low).
