"Everyone is special." Really? In what way exactly can "everyone" be "special"? But we keep telling that nonsensical drivel to kids that grow up and find out they are not the least bit special and neither is anyone else. That's got to leave a mark.
Maybe if we told them everyone is a boring cog in a huge unfeeling machine called society they'd be more prepared to deal with it and it would not be a shock to them when they find out that just about nobody is special and just about everyone is average. That fall from fantasy to reality hurts. I've seen it just about kill people.
