Ficlet

And So We Fade - 4800 words, Merlin/Arthur, PG-13, flangst, future fic, minor character death, incomprehensible physics, and the coin thing is shamelessly stolen from T.H. White (with my deepest apologies) - the servants tended to look away when it came to Arthur and his sorcerer (to Merlin and his king)

“Where,” said Arthur in what he considered to be a very rational tone given the circumstances, “are my chambers?” )

fic, merlin, merlin/arthur

Beautiful and extremely well written. You've said so much with so few words. Amazing job :)

Thank you :). And 'precise' is so lovely to hear; sometimes my rambliness makes my head spin!

Oh dear sweet jesus this was absolutely beautiful, and heartbreaking. Merlin fading away and Arthur all alone on his throne just kills me.

Thank you! I've always thought that the Merlin/Arthur story is just so sad and so short-lived; 'heartbreaking' is the perfect term!

Oh wow, this is beautiful.

I love how you've portrayed the both of them; broken men at the top of a great kingdom. The tone of this piece is fantastic; even when it's happy, it's still sad underneath, and I love that. I also love crazy!Merlin because really, how could one in his position not be? Both of them are so well characterized. I love it. ♥

Thank you! And I'm so glad this stayed sad for you because I was rolling my eyes at the end at how ridiculously saccharine it was becoming. And yes: how can Merlin not go a bit crazy with all that power, alone in the same way that Arthur is and yet not quite?

Thanks for reading!

The legends have a way with frequent allusions to the past or future, and I think you have done a wonderful job in keeping with that tone here. Within those two endpoints, though, you have Arthur attempting to capture the moment that is Merlin and everything they have at that time. Gorgeous.

It makes sense that Arthur would be the one rooted to the earth while Merlin gradually circles away; beautiful like a bird to be cherished, but not to be caged for long!

I've always been a huge fan of the legends and my brain apparently cannot handle all these different versions so it tries to combine them, so I'm glad it came out somewhat (if not totally!) comprehensible! And I love the bird analogy -- that's exactly how I've always envisioned their relationship!

Thank you for reading and commenting!
