The ending of this op-ed in the WashPost today nearly made me cry, and I'm straight:
I want to remember that today, too many people like me live in places where marriage rights are laughable, because they aren’t lucky enough to live in a place where freedom and equality were enshrined by founders into a system that arcs toward justice, sometimes surprisingly fast, usually far too slowly. Today, too many people like me are still being hurt and killed, kept from loving freely, made to lie, to hate and harm themselves. To all of you: We are out here, we are your family, we’re coming for you. Hang on, you won’t always be alone. -- Will Graham
So true. I work with two people who are in that situation: they themselves or their partners are from countries where homosexuality is still illegal. Any time they visit family, they have to pretend that they're merely friends - yet, in one case, they're actually married.
Drive-by commentor, some of us can use Google Translate. Frankly, I hope this DOES happen all over the world, sooner rather than later. There's no point in persecuting consenting adults for what they consent to.
That last bit just screams for a Facebook meme. Top panel: Palin, with that nasty quote. Bottom panel: triptych of rainbow flag, medical caduceus, and Bree Newsome, with text of "Just fine, thanks!"
