I'm still no fan, but I really loved the last episode.

I'm also seriously thinking of pitching an article about Joan as Scrodinger's Watson.

We made the lemon cake. I highly recommend the modifications listed in the comments (add honey to the batter, among others). Ours came out best in gem pans, the ones that are about half the size of muffin cups; the cakes are wonderful but very dense. Be sure to drizzle them with glaze repeatedly, not just once.

If I ever do them, I'm going to use the lemon curd icing idea.
