rislyn is coming to visit. This makes me very happy. And I now have evidence that josephinegreen is alive, meaing she's just ignoring me, and that makes me sorta happy, too.
Heh... as if we could be so lucky. In all honesty, I think a real goal at this point is to have the Miers confirmation hearings drag as long as possible. If we can keep O'Conner in for another year, we hit midterms, and a potentially very different political spectrum.
Then again, the fact that Bush is alienating his Religious Right base by *not* nominating a radical is amusing to watch.
I'm just worried that after she gets voted down (and I think she will at this rate, whoever's in the Senate), he's going to nominate someone really terrifying and faaar to the right. And, unless midterms really change the balance of power in the Senate (I suppose they might, they way things look now) s/he'll be confirmed on the sole basis of the Republican majority.
A year ago, I would've looked at the political situation right now and danced for joy, anticipating a pendulum swing towards a more Democratic, or at least balanced, government. Now, though, I just don't have the energy for optimism. It seems like this admin can spin anything--maybe that's coming to an end, but I'm not counting on it.
As I remember, next year, there are 18 Dems and 15 Rep Senate seats up. The Dems have to hold and get half of those Republicans to regain a majority. It's certainly not the likliest scenario, but I think the President's party loses an average of 6 seats in midterms, so it's actually not far off.
And, based on the fact that midterms *are* coming up, I wouldn't be surprised if at least some Republicans express anxiety at a rabid nominee... especially those 15 on the hot seat. (Admittedly, don't have numbers for which of those are going to get a *boost* from electing a fascist into office.)
