Why doesn't "emotional valley" work? I mean, "emotional peaks and valleys" is a cliché for a reason.

Part of it is rhythmn. But part of it is that in my head "emotional peak" and "physical peak" sort of imply a pinnacle, a superlative. I associate "peak" with "greatest"; I do not associate "valley", as a word, with "worst".
