The minute I hear the corn-fed drawl of the coroner standing across from
me, I know this case is in the FBI’s pocket. And while I may not be too
happy at being told I have to wait for the ME, nor with being corrected
by a jumped up Secret Service agent who looks young enough to be my
daughter, I’m feeling pretty confident. Okay, it’s a shame about the
guy being dead but hey, if you’re gonna die, do it on Air Force One,
right? There’s prestige for you. Ah, who am I kidding? This case is
gonna be a big boost for the career of one Tobias Fornell.
The ME finally turns up and I have to smile to myself. He sounds about as
sharp as the Kansas coroner did, just with a different accent. He’s got
two underlings with him but they don’t say much. One of them makes some
smartass comments about all the LEOs contaminating the crime scene but I
stand my ground and sure enough they back down and let me stay. The ME
may think he’s in charge but he obviously recognizes the force of the
FBI when he’s faced with it, and after asking a few questions and
getting some answers from the Secret Service gal, he does the right thing
and tells me I can take the body.
“Why the hell didn’t you just tell me that?” I snap at Doc Kansas
but he just brushes me off and passes the buck back to the ME then tells
me the release forms are in his car. I tell Agent Todd we’ll sort out
jurisdiction on the way to Andrews and then head off the plane to finally
take control of what just could be the career-making case of my life.
I can hear the plane starting up just as I sign off the release forms but
Todd’s nowhere in sight so I head back up the steps. “Damn it, Agent
Todd, let’s get this show on the road!”
One of the ME’s lackeys meets me at the top, waving me off and yapping
something about overbooking the flight. Next thing I know the door’s
closed in my face and the steps are pushed off as the plane taxis away
with the lackey grinning and waving at me from the window.
Doc Kansas is grinning as I run over to him and demand to know what the
hell’s going on.
“Guess Ducky decided to take the body to Washington,” he tells me.
“Why would your medical examiner take the body to Washington?” I ask
though there’s a sinking feeling in my gut that tells me I don’t want
to know the answer.
“Never said he was my medical examiner,” the doc says.
“Then who the hell’s medical examiner is he?” I ask.
“Ducky? He works for NCIS.”
I turn and watch the plane take off and know someone on that plane just
pulled a swift one on me. Whoever it is will find out soon enough though
that Tobias Fornell doesn’t take being played kindly. Get even’s my
middle name.
