“Oh, isn’t that beautiful?” She exclaimed in awe.
“Yeah, it’s gorgeous.” I teased in mock adoration. We continued walking on the path in the park in silence for a few moments, then I leaned dramatically toward her. “Um…Kate?” I said with such a look that made her chuckle.
“Yeah?”
“What exactly should I be looking at?”
“Oh!” She exclaimed as she impacted her elbow with my stomach. She sighed, finally realizing that I was probably a lost cause, but continued anyway. “The trees…the flowers…the birds.” She gestured emphatically at each of the beauties she mentioned as if the over-the top motions would knock some sense into me or at least help me to more easily see her point.
“I’m looking…yep! Those are definitely trees, flowers and birds.” My teasing remark earned me another elbow to the gut.
“It’s spring, Tony! You’re supposed to enjoy it. With our line of work, we see so much blood, death and aggression. Out here, it’s just the opposite; it’s life and peacefulness. Sometimes it’s nice to just get away from it all and take in the scenery.”
“You’re right!” I said emphatically. “So…we done yet?” I grinned.
“TONY!”
I decided that I really should stop making witty remarks that would result in bodily harm, or I’d eventually end up with a really big dent in my lower intestines. “Sorry!” I said in my defense. “I’m just not a ‘oh, let’s go sit with the flowers’ type of guy.”
“I’ve noticed.” She chuckled. “That’s part of the reason why I had to convince you to come out here. I had to show you what you’re missing.” She had been hounding me for the better part of a week, trying to convince me to come with her on this trip. She had even tried to convince McGee to offer me a bet that I wouldn’t go, but fortunately for me, I had overheard them talking, and even tried to make ‘em squirm for a little while with it, before letting them know that I knew they were trying to pull something over me. It was a good idea though, I was actually kinda proud of her for it. She knew I’m a sucker for cheatin’ Mc- Do- Good out of some money, so she tried to implement a bet, something she knew I couldn’t resist. That was actually part of the reason I did actually end up agreeing to go on the little sightseeing trip around the park; I admired her efforts, most of which were worthy of my name. Of course, I had already decided to go, from one of the first times she asked me. I had decided to let her squirm ‘til the end of the week, but I didn’t know she’d be that persistent.
“What I’m missing …” I dramatically looked at my watch. “is an episode of ‘Magnum’, a hot pizza, and a cold beer.”
She groaned, as she rolled her eyes and grimaced. She’d sighed, finally admitting defeat. “Ok, we can head back.” She started toward the car, thinking that I was serious that I didn’t want to be there.
“Hey!” I ran to catch up to her. I threw my arm around her shoulders and pulled her back onto the path. “Where are you going? I’m actually kinda enjoying it. I just like messin’ with ya.”
She delivered yet another painful blow.
“OW!”
