Dr. Gutterman, the back up ME, said that death was instantaneous. Gibbs chose to believe him.

Ducky was dead. A massive heart attack. At work. Doing what he enjoyed.

Gibbs spoke at the funeral. The entire team was there.

“Ducky was my friend. We worked together a long time. I will miss him very much.”

Then there was the reading of Ducky’s will.

I bequeath to my dear friend Leroy Jethro Gibbs: my home Reston House, and the bulk of my estate to disseminate as he wishes.

“This is for you Agent Gibbs,” a lawyer said as he handed the gray-haired agent an ivory parchment envelope sealed with an ornate letter M.

“My Dear Jethro,
I probably should have told you this years ago, but the time never seemed right. I thought I gave you clues to my feelings but perhaps I misread you. I stood by you at your weddings because you asked me to do so, but now I must tell you something: I love you, I have loved you from the day I met you and I will always love you."

Ducky

Gibbs eyes filled with tears, a sob escaped from his lips.

“My God Ducky, I never knew.”
