"Ducky, there's something I have to tell you." Gibbs spoke softly, as he walked across the sitting room to where his long-term lover was waiting for him.

Ducky looked up at him and smiled. The love he felt for Gibbs blazed, as it always did, from his pale blue eyes. "Yes, my dear," he said, taking Gibbs's hand and tugging him down.

For a moment Gibbs hesitated. But then seeing the look of confusion on Ducky's face, he allowed himself to be pulled down and kissed.

After a moment or two, he gently broke the kiss and moved away.

"My dear?" Ducky asked, his tone a mixture of puzzlement and hurt.

Gibbs swallowed hard. He had never wanted to hurt Ducky; not again. Over the years, he'd done that far too many times and he'd vowed he would never do it again. And it was a promise he had intended to keep. But things change; the absurd, the bizarre, the hitherto unbelievable, the what you never dreamed of, would have poured scorn on, laughed about, did happen.

For a moment he closed his eyes and considered not telling Ducky. After all, he'd been unfaithful before, why was this any different? But it was. He knew that. He knew that he couldn't cheat on the man he loved, the man he worshipped, the man he'd kill for, die for, the man who showed him what life and love were about. The man who completed him, made him whole, the man who touched his heart and soul as well as his body. Oh, and how he touched his body; hard, rough, fast; exactly the way Gibbs liked to be touched. Even a minute away from him was too much. No, he couldn’t do it. Not this time.

He crouched down in front of Ducky and took his hands. "Duck," he said gently, hating himself but knowing that he had to do it. And he had to do it now. "Duck," he repeated. "I'm so sorry, so very sorry, but . . . " He broke off; he couldn't tell Ducky. He couldn’t.

"Go on, dearest. You can tell me. You know you can tell me anything. Whatever it is, I'll understand. I always have."

Doubt if you will this time, Duck. "Ducky. Please believe me when I say that I never meant this to happen. But . . . Oh, hell. Duck, there's no easy way to say this. But, you see, I've fallen in love, really in love." Ducky's face barely changed. Except his eyes and they became frozen, and under Gibbs's gaze Ducky began to hastily erect the barriers he rarely put up.

"And with whom might that be, Jethro?" The 'this time' hung in the air between them.

Gibbs swallowed hard. "DiNozzo," he said. "Duck, I've fallen in love with Tony and I'm going to live with him. I'm so sorry, Duck. So very, very sorry. If I could -"

"Get out." Ducky shook off Gibbs's hands and stood up.

"What?"

"I said get out. Get out of my house, Gibbs. Get out of my house and get out of my life. For good this time. Do you hear me? Get out. Get out now."

"But, Duck, I -" Gibbs stared after Ducky as slowly, but with a straight back, he limped from the room.

For a moment or two he just stayed where he was, squatting on the floor, not certain what to do. He hated himself for what he'd done, for hurting his dearest, oldest, closest friend. But it would be worth it; once he was back in Tony's arms, with his mouth on his, and his hands moving over his body, caressing him, stroking him, everything would be all right.

Yes, he'd hurt Ducky, and this time the hurt went beyond any hurt Gibbs had ever caused his old friend, Gibbs knew that. And of course he regretted it. But the kind of love he had for and with Tony only came once in a lifetime, and only then if you were very, very, very lucky. And when it came, you had to reach out and grab it with both hands before it slipped away.

He stood up, and with one final glance around the room he knew so well, he turned and strode out of the room, out of the house, out of Ducky's life. He left behind all of his belongings, even his boat. None of them mattered; nothing mattered beyond one thing, one person: Anthony DiNozzo, his lover, his life, his very essence. The man he'd grow old with and love even with his last breath.

He gunned his car engine and pulled away from the house, leaving behind him his past and driving off into the future; his future; his future with Tony.

"No!" Jethro woke up with a start. His breathing was labored; sweat poured from his body and face; his throat felt like sandpaper, and he was shaking violently.

"Jethro, my dear, what is it?" Ducky also sat up; the deep concern in his voice was clear.

"Duck?" Jethro put the bedside light on and looked at his lover. "It's you. Oh, thank God, it's you. Oh, Ducky."

"Of course it's me, dearest. Who else were you expecting it to be? Jethro, what -"

Jethro pulled Ducky into his arms and kissed him desperately. "Oh, Duck," he murmured, pulling his lover even nearer. "Oh, Duck. Oh, Duck. Oh, Duck."

"Jethro, please. Tell me. What is wrong?"

"I'd never do it, Duck. I couldn't. I wouldn't. It's impossible."

"What is, my dear?"

"I'm so sorry, Duck."

"For what, Jethro. Tell me." Ducky's tone changed slightly. It became firm and strict, and he pulled himself back a little in order to look at Jethro.

It worked. "I left you, Duck. I dreamed I left you. I left you. I left you. I left you for . . . DiNozzo."

Ducky's eyes widened. "Is there something you haven't told me, dearest?" he said, trying to keep the amusement from his voice and his face.

"Ducky!"

"I'm sorry, my dear. But Anthony?"

"Yeah. I know. God, I'd never be that desperate."

"Jethro." Ducky spoke sharply. "That is a unfair. Anthony is a very nice young man."

"He's okay, I guess. But he's not my type. You know that, Duck, don't you? I mean I know that you've told me before now that sometimes dreams can be whatsits. But this isn't. It isn't. I'd never . . . You do know that, don't you?"

"Of course I do, my dear," Ducky said placidly. "Now why do you not tell me about this dream of yours."

"More like a nightmare. I told you I was sorry for hurting you, and I was, I really was. But I was in love, really in love with him, and was going to live with him." Jethro shuddered at the memory.

"And what did I say or do?"

"Told me to get out. Get out of your house. Your life. And I did."

"Just like that?"

"Yeah. Left you. Left all my things. Left my boat. Left everything and went to him. God, Ducky, how could I have done that?" Jethro pulled Ducky back against him, and held him tightly.

Ducky snuggled into the embrace happily and began to stroke Jethro's body, his caresses sure, slow, gentle, loving; exactly the way Jethro liked to be touched. As he did, he moved his head a little and claimed Jethro's lips with his own mouth.

Forty minutes later Jethro settled down, with Ducky still in his arms, sated and loved into sleepiness. He was certain that his dreams would now be good ones. "Night, Duck," he murmured, burying his lips and nose in Ducky's sweet smelling hair.

"Goodnight, dearest. Oh, and Jethro."

"Mmm."

"If you really believed that I would let you go to Anthony so easily, you are sorely mistaken. Do not forget that I am a surgeon. I am certain that to be an adequate lover for you, there are one or two essential items that Anthony would need. Now, goodnight, my dear."

And with those final words and a chaste kiss, Ducky closed his eyes and went back to sleep; a small smile of contentment on his face.
