Wow. I really like the insight that Gibbs has into Tony and his behavior. It rings so true that he sees beneath Tony's juvenile acting up to the true reasons and strength of character.

I figured there had to be something... canon-wise Gibbs has gotten rid of or had no use for people who would appear a better fit for the job than Tony. He's got to have some reason for keeping the guy around. :)

I love the idea of Tony following Gibbs home to make sure he's okay--and your reasoning behind it. I think people forget sometimes that Tony is the only member of the team other than Gibbs who had field experience before joining the team.

I think people forget sometimes that Tony is the only member of the team other than Gibbs who had field experience before joining the team.

And even though they're never definite about what that field experience is, you get the sense that he'd know about the need for a twenty-four hour watch, or at least most of one. And I figured he's smart enough to know that Gibbs wouldn't want have a twenty-four hour watch put on him, so would try to be sneaky... and Gibbs would be able to spot Tony shadowing him. I get the idea that Gibbs doesn't mind people being concerned about him, as long as it doesn't get in his way (or they try to make him talk about his feelings).
