A Chilling Development

Is it just my imagination, or did LJ's advertisements suddenly become page-crushing monsters that play video and freeze up the whole page until the video starts to run? Come on, LJ, why won't you play ice? What if I were using dial-up; it'd load at a glacial pace, leaving me out in the cold. For a website that's supposedly for community, this is an ( Read more... )

Ads that pop up over the screen are one thing, but not being able to close them until they've played for 5 seconds or something like that is really fucking annoying.

There are a gazillion programs that can post to LJ, but I don't know of any that can read it... for that very reason (avoiding ads) the LJ maintainers would be much less happy with that than posting clients.

I've only gotten one of those so far, and it pissed me off.

Most clients I know allow you to post but not read. Maybe try switching to Basic for a while? I'm pretty sure they don't show ads, unless something's changed since I last paid attention to account levels.

Oh yeah, I did change account levels - which means I can fix it myself! Hurrah. I guess I just have to choose between userpics and sanity.

Huh? I've never seen any ads on LJ.It's always pretty chill for me. Why is it giving you the cold shoulder?

Hm! Perhaps Rachel's right about switching back to Basic. I'd completely forgotten that I had changed account levels until she reminded me.

I don't know if LJ allows you to switch back to Basic anymore. I know they'll never force anyone to switch to the ad-supported one, but the default subscription level is the ad-supported one now (for revenue purposes).

I could be wrong about that. I would be really annoyed if LJ suddenly switched me to the ad-supported mode.

yeah, the lack of Adblock Plus is the main reason I couldn't stand Chrome when I tested it.It might browse faster... but I'm used to seeing the internet without all the advertising, and I refuse to go back.
