Two in as many years? Dave Arneson, one of the Great Old Ones who spawned Dungeons and Dragons, passed away on Tuesday night. In the Believer article you linked, a footnote describes your post's title as "obscure." I was a little confused. It seemed obvious to me, right? So I took a second and thought about it. Nope, still obvious.

Sadly, I have discovered that Arneson did not invent hit points. He adopted them from a Civil War naval simulator. My mind is less blown. Still, it's a noteworthy step to import a system from ships to bodies, no?

And hey, SOMEONE invented hit points.
