Apparently bananas are evil?

I was just chastised in our building café for asking for a banana.

I saw they only had apples and oranges, and I already had an apple today for breakfast so I thought I would ask for a banana. Big mistake. The head of the café responded to my question as to the availability of bananas as if I had asked “excuse me, can I get a barbequed spotted owl with a side of great white shark fin soup garnished with some ground up rhino horn?” He got this look of utter disgust on his face and said, “We don’t carry bananas here. We aren’t allowed, bananas are a High Carbon Food!” I responded with mild confusion at the vehemence of his response, as I had never seen someone get pissed off over a banana. He went on to elaborate telling me that they use so much jet fuel to get them to the market and then they gas them when they arrive to make them ripe so apparently bananas are directly responsible for a not insignificant amount of the damage to the environment. To that end our café is banned from “dealing in” bananas. The head of the café acts as though eating bananas is roughly the same as driving around in an extended cab hummer with the AC going and all four windows down.

Having some one lay a guilt trip on me for eating bananas was a first for me.
