NCAA Penn State Penalty

Earlier on Facebook, I got wrapped up in the hoopla around the Penn State fine being levied. I figured they were worth putting up here. I'd like to edit it so that it can be one coherent essay, but I've spent too much of my day already talking about it. So for now here it is in all its rawness. Before you read it, let me say that I'd have an easier ( Read more... )

Multiple counts of rape of a minor. Conspiracy to obstruct justice from a more or less complicit administration. Terrible, awful things that have legal repercussions in and of themselves which include financial damages and jail time. Last I checked, we don't tar and feather people, ride them out on rails, or brand them with a hot iron any more. I understand this is a lightning rod issue. I understand why people are upset. However, the NCAA does regularly step in regarding cases of institutional dereliction of student welfare, loss of institutional control, or cover-up of ethical misconduct. They found evidence that the football culture of PSU directly impacted the crimes, and thus, needed to pursue punitive and corrective actions to that program.

I agree with the opinion that the crime should be prosecuted in the criminal courts but that the crime had nothing to do with the actual college football program itself so the players and fans should not be punished for non-football-program-associated criminal actions by the administration.

I have zero first hand knowledge, but I have a strong suspicion that every school with any serious aspirations of winning a national championship in any revenue sport (with the exception of maybe the Mormon schools) has their athletic department - and the students it oversees - insulating themselves from the consequences of their poor decisions. The result being that their punishments are far too often lighter what most of us would consider to be "normal". It's the same reason the Yankees would like to keep one of their players out of trouble - it's a protection of the money that's been invested in them. To that degree. Rodriguez covered up quite a few things: Pacman Jones' putting a man in ICU with a pool cue, theft/fencing rings, etc. I get it. It's not right, but I get it ( ... )
