One of the biggest issues with the furry fandom is that it IS so close knit. It's not anyone's fault, it's just the nature of fandoms that are brought together by a very specific theme or trait. There are a number of people who treat me as persona non grata because I have connections with a few people who have wronged the fandom somehow. Personally, I think they have time to police other people's friend lists, then they have too much time on their hands.
