Meet the new Hawks, same as the old Hawks.

For a nearly 13-1/2 minutes stretch in the first half, the Hawks failed to score a single field goal in the first half of their game against the Heat. Yes, over a quarter without a field goal.

You don't have to take my word for it, just peep the play-by-playSo, of course, they only managed to score 13 points in the second quarter. 27 first half ( Read more... )

No Al Horford.
Pachulia attempted two shots that game.

Tonight was the second day of a Home/Away back to back, and the third game played in four days. Granted, Miami is in the same time zone, but it should be somewhat figured that the Hawks were in for a very tough game.

While the Atlanta Hawks haven't been stricken with injuries to the level of the Houston Rockets, they have been hit very hard. Their team has very little depth and relies on their starting five -- scratch that -- their starting four to get things done.

With 1/2 of their starting four missing significant time in recent weeks, what do you expect.

When healthy, the team is still a very dangerous team. They're not a championship team, no. But they are team that Boston in particular has trouble with -- and not just as a fluke.

They're a work in progress.

All good points that can explain the generally poor overall play from the Hawks of late, but that doesn't explain a 13-1/2 minute scoring drought. Look at a team as woeful as, say the Clippers a team just as dependent on their starting five and pretty much dead in the water due to injuries, and they haven't had a stretch of futility like that in a game this season.

Joe Johnson needs to step his game up. He's a stud, but he's been less than ideal, way too streaky when it comes to his field goal percentage recently, hasn't shot over 50% from the field in a game since 2008.

Horford is important in regards to team chemistry. This is a team that has the ability to defend well and show up but offense as well as defense is very streaky.

Josh Smith and Marvin Williams are stepping up and when they play well the Hawks succeed. I've seen the Hawks shoot below 40% on one night and then shoot +55% the next.
