Oh yes. They loathed novels and they loved them. I rememeber how at the end of The Wide Wide World Ellen's practically fiance asks her to promise him just two things while he's away: to write to him and to read no novels.

Wonderful collection! I particularly liked the engraving (a book-illustration?) of the lady reading at an open window. I don't know if you have come across this Portuguese site which has a gallery of paintings on this theme:
