Animalistic chimeras shouldn't be able to do alchemy at all, but in the anime they let Tucker keep doing alchemy even after he transmuted himself into... that thing.
The first game is fun, but the story to the second is better and considerably less with the Mary-Sue-ism. And, there's a lot more funny lines that kill me.
Incidentally, if Al dies you can either leave him alone and he'll come back to life in a few minutes, or if you run over to him you can revive him with alchemy. (Dunno if you knew that already or not.)
