A couple of my self-promotion no-nos:

1- Don't hijack somebody else's blog for your self-promotion. There's nothing more obnoxious than somebody pimping their project in a comment thread that has nothing to do with it.

2- Don't misuse a convention panel to promote your work. After the initial introductions, only mention your projects if they're pertinent to the discussion. Also, don't set up a wall of your books; it's tacky and distracting. Flash them during the introduction and then put them away.

Those are good no-nos. I think I'm going to have to bring up some stuff about social skills in this panel, since most of the mistakes in self-promotion are examples of poor social skills.

Ooh! The etiquette of self-promotion sounds really interesting! I have no thoughts on it other than I need to get some of it, because I think I'd be a better self-promoter if I had some guidelines.
