For the last month I've been reading slush* for Clarkesworld Magazine. Clarkesworld gets a lot of submissions, so there are four slush readers, and all four of us started when submissions re-opened on September 20th ( Read more... )

It is weird! Since we read the stories in the order they're submitted, sometimes it turns out that I get a friend's story, and sometimes it doesn't, but I do notice the names coming through and hope that the stories will be recommendable. This should probably go without saying, but I'll say it anyway--if I get a story by someone I know, I read it the same way I'd read anyone's.

It sounds like grueling work. My slushpile isn't nearly that big and it is a pain to go through some times. Good luck with it.

So far, it hasn't been bad, but I admit that I'm still in the honeymoon phase for this gig. *g* Usually I try to read a batch of stories each morning, and then I'm done until the next day. With everyone doing their part, the queue hasn't gotten out of control.
