Very interesting.

Two personal favorites:

George Orwell, Homage to Catalonia (I love most of what Orwell has written and, in particular, the style of his writing.)

Neil Stephenson, The Diamond Age (His world building skills are awesome.)

Sorry but I absolutely loathed "Doomsday Book" by Connie Willis for its utterly contrived plot involving an explication lack of cell phones in the future.

On the other hand, I highly recommend two of my all-time favorites: "Dying Inside" by Robert Silverberg and "The Dispossed" by Ursula Le Guin.
