Actually, I was going to suggest a cookie sheet, something with short sides, sprinkle a layer of salt on the bottom and have him practice writing in the salt with his finger, or the eraser end of a pencil. When he's filled up all the space, give it a gentle shake and the salt will smooth back over and give him a new, clean writing surface. He can practice as long as he wants, but not use up a ton of paper!

LOL, I'm not going to tell him about your first suggestion, mmkay? He's a guy - he'll figure it out on his own eventually, I have no doubt. :-P

But the cookie sheet idea is brilliant! I have to ask - do you ALWAYS have brilliant ideas? It seems that way to me. :-)

I'm not originally brilliant, I just read a ton of books on fun things to do with little kids when my kids were little, and I parrot them back when the situation arises!
