These two hour naps are getting ridiculous. I don't mean to take them ( Read more... )

I'm with you on the joys of reading through winter. I got through quite a lot of books last winter - especially due to the fact that I was breastfeeding Hamish who would fall asleep as I proceeded to read. I have inevitably slowed down as my energy has returned and the inevitable house cleaning issues were gagging to be dealt with to say nothing of 2 baby quilts pending... one down, one to go. It sounds like you're not the only one in need of a rest/quiet time. I am quite grateful for any chance to sleep with my kids in the afternoon. Kahlil would refuse to while I was pregnant the last time and I would have to nod off in front of the TV with him because he couldn't cope with the thought of going to bed. So far Hamish is cooperative with the afternoon nap and I'm hoping that doesn't change.

You gotta get your nest prepared before the baby shows up! I remember feeling desperate about having everything sorted and put away. Then there will be a nice long stretch of breastfeeding and reading again!

I shall post on that soon. I have had moments of panic in the tired first trimester and have implemented a few changes since then!

why is your house so cold? can't you turn up the heating?

those books sound amazing. i haven't read anything since i got back from togo, though i'm probably going to join a new book club here to keep me on track.

I would crank up the thermostat even more but something about Hurricane Katrina damaging natural gas lines or something has made our energy bills outrageously high. But we also got exhaust vents put in both upstairs bathrooms which may be losing some of the heat that usually gets trapped upstairs. I don't know. I was going to put weather-proofing film on the windows and replace the weather stripping around the doors but I never did get to it. Next year I'll get right on that. Today is about twenty degrees warmer than yesterday and the house is quite comfortable. Stupid Iowa weather ( ... )

Gaaaaahhh!!! <--- wail of a person with too tall a TBR pile who keeps getting good recs

Sounds too perfect to miss out on, though.

Naps are good. Naps are necessary. Having that kind of cuddletime with kidlets is something they'll carry away (even unconsciously) their whole lives, I feel certain. So no guilt!

Oh, man, I hate to do that to you but those books are some of the best I've read in a long time! Perhaps you could boot some of the dry books on the list down to the bottom? Like, keep Brothers Karamazov, but Gulag Archipelago can wait until you're stranded on a desert island.

Those books sound like something my husband would absolutely love, and he is always hungry for a new book to read at work. Yes, he gets to read at work sometimes, the bastard. I think I'll have to pick those up for him. I might end up reading them too, and enjoying them, probably, but I haven't been as much of a reader these days as I once was. Mike gives me the play-by-play of what he reads, though, kind of like you did for Corey it sounds like.

Man, re: the napping, I've pretty much always had a proclivity for extreme napping, such that some most days I can't even imagine possibly making it through a normal-sized day without at least a catnap if not a full-on 2-hour coma. Caffeine is my best weapon if I choose to try to combat the nap attack. If.

Oh, and I think Mike just re-read Cryptonomicon (see, he needs new material), so, yeah, perfect. :)

He'll dig these books. Cryptonomicon is to the Baroque Cycle what The Hobbit is to The Lord of the Rings. There's more depth, more breadth, and way too many moments that made me laugh out loud way too long.

I wish I could have naps right now! Obviously your body needs them so don't feel too bad about it. It all sounds very cosy curled up with a book and the kids!
