Summary: Jackie talks with the new Doctor, before going back to her universe.
“So, you've got a new face then?” Jackie says, settling onto the empty seat beside the Doctor. He doesn't say anything; he just keeps looking at the commotion in his ship. “Is that how it works with your species? The older you get, the younger you look?”
The Doctor finally looks at her and smiles.
“No, the Time Lords don't work like that.”
Jackie giggles, but doesn't add anything; they observe everyone interact in the console room.
Everyone looks happy to be there. Jackie sees Rose laugh for the first time in years while she hugs Captain Jack. She knows she did the right thing when she supported Rose to not give up and to keep fighting to go back to her Doctor. Jackie knew her daughter would never be happy in the parallel world. She didn't want to lose her little girl, but after those years, she felt like Rose was already gone. Now Jackie knows she's with the Doctor she can be at peace. Even if things get hard, Jackie knows it's where Rose wants to be and she'll be happy. Doesn't matter if the Doctor has a new face or not, Rose would always want him.
“Just give her some time, she'll adjust again,” Jackie says, making the Doctor snort.
“I don't know, Jackie. She looked pretty disappointed when she saw this new me,” the Doctor says bitterly.
“She came back for the Doctor and it wasn't like she didn't know you could change your face,” Jackie tells him. She remembers talking with Rose about this a couple of months ago. She asked her daughter what she'd do if the Doctor changed his face again and Rose just said “I don't care about his face, I love him.”
“But it doesn't make things any easier.”
“No, it doesn't,” Jackie agrees. “But the thing is... Rose is not the same without you.”
“What you mean?” the Doctor asks, his expression turning a little dark.
“The day you said goodbye, Rose had a nervous breakdown. Things got really bad after that. I don't know if she'd survive another...” Jackie doesn't complete her sentence, but she knows the Doctor has an idea what she wants to tell him.
“Is she better now?” the Doctor asks worried. He looks so old, even with his baby's face.
“She will be, now she's here,” Jackie tells him, honestly.
The Doctor gives her a sad look before muttering an “I'm sorry.”
“It's not your fault; none of this is. Bad things happen sometimes to good people, but now Rose’s got you back, everything will be okay.”
“You think?” he asks with doubt in his voice.
Jackie smiles and looks at him like he's an idiot.
“You plum, I know,” the Doctor giggles at her and she rolls her eyes. He could be such a man sometimes.
“Things were pretty bad after...You know,” he says with a grim expression. She could bet he's remembering something awful that happened while Rose was gone.
“I guessed it'd be, the way you lot were together,” Jackie says with a note of disapproval in her voice.
“Yeah,” the Doctor watches Rose laughing at something Jack said and smiles.
“Just promise you'll take care of her; that you'll take care of yourself,” she begs him. “I won't be here when things get bad like the last Christmas I spent here.”
“I know,” the Doctor nods. “I promise I'll do my best for both of us.”
“I know you'll do,” Jackie tells him, looking into his eyes. “I just want to you be happy.”
“Thanks, Jackie,” he smiles at her and, to her surprise, pulls her into an embrace.
Jackie hugs him back and she notices Rose is watching them with a little smile on her lips. They'll work things out; they just need some time alone. Time always make things better.
