Their first hug was on the same day they met for the first time. Penny asked Leonard and Sheldon to get her TV from her ex-boyfriend and, even if they didn't get the TV and ended up without pants, she was grateful. Penny thought they were so sweet for trying that she hugged them and offered to pay for their dinner. She never thought about why Sheldon didn't try to push her away when she hugged him.
The second time the hug was initiated by Sheldon. Penny was so surprised and happy when she felt Sheldon's arms awkwardly surround her. She never saw Sheldon initiating contact with someone, so she didn't know how to handle the moment. Penny tried to keep her hands to herself, just touching him where she could reach, pressing her face against his shoulder. She was so happy she couldn't muffle her giggles and didn’t notice how much time he spent hugging her.
The third hug, Penny wasn't expecting. When she promised Sheldon she would talk to Leonard about allowing Sheldon to accompany him on his trip to Switzerland, she never saw Sheldon so grateful. She wasn't expecting him to run toward her and embrace her. She was so surprised with his unexpected action, that she just stood there, allowing him to hug her. Penny tried not to think about why she was the only person whom Sheldon displayed his affection for in physical form.
The fourth hug was the result of tragedy. The Cheesecake Factory caught fire on a night that she had to work. It was chaos inside the restaurant. She could only remember people running away from the flames and the smoke making it difficult to see things, then finding it hard to breathe before she had fallen unconscious. When she woke up later, she was at the hospital and Sheldon was the person sitting beside her. Penny watched his worried expression became a relieved one when Sheldon saw that she was awake. Before she could say anything, he hugged her. He gripped her tight, his fingers entangled in her hair while his face was pressed into the crook of her neck. Penny muffled a pained moan, trying to relax into his embrace and let him hold onto her. She didn't care that she was feeling sick; it was so good to know how much Sheldon cared that the pain was worth it.
The fifth time was initiated by Penny. Sheldon went to Germany for two months because of his research. Penny never imagined how much she would miss him. It was worse than the time he went away with the guys to the Arctic for three months. Probably because this time she was used to spending more of her time with him than with Leonard, Raj and Howard together. She missed him so much that when he came back, she ran toward him and literally jumped into his arms. She was so happy when he just hugged her back that she didn't even care they were in the middle of the airport.
The first time Penny traveled to her parents’ house in Nebraska after Sheldon's return from Germany, they kept in contact. He called her every night for the three weeks she spent with her parents. Penny told him about the farm, the people she met there and some stories about her childhood. He just listened the whole time. When she came back from her trip, Penny saw Sheldon in her doorway waiting for her. This time he didn't run into her arms. He waited for her to come to him and, when she tried to hug him, Sheldon kissed her on the lips.
